Jackson, Glenda

   b. 1936, Birkenhead
   Actress and politician
As an actress, Glenda Jackson was noted for her powerful stage and screen performances. Following success in the theatre, emphatic interpretation of her roles gained widespread attention on screen in the acclaimed adaptation of D.H.Lawrence’s Women in Love (1969), directed by Ken Russell, for which she won an Oscar. In the 1970s she offered a forceful portrayal of Elizabeth I in Mary, Queen of Scots and showed an aptitude for comedy in A Touch of Class, for which she was awarded her second Oscar. Varied theatre and film appearances of the 1980s included involvement in further Ken Russell projects, including Salomé’s Last Dance and The Rainbow. Jackson retired from acting in the 1990s to become a Labour Member of Parliament.
